Intaglio Printmaking

Fancy that printmaking is the theme.
This semester, my "indulgent" class is an elective called "Intaglio" printmaking.
This is something that I have had real interest in for a while. It is a sort of printmaking that has been used for ages. Among some of the famous intaglio printmakers:

-Albrecht Durer
-Rembrandt
-John Taylor
-Daniel Hopfer

The process is quite difficult and lengthy.

1.You must first take a copper plate and degrease it of all human oils.
2.You must cover it with a solvent of beeswax
3.You must carve an image into the beeswax.
4. You must place the piece into acid for about an hour, depending on the piece.
5. You must scrape off the beeswax and apply ink.
6. You must use an expensive printing press that can press all that ink into the paper.

So why am I doing this? Why do I choose this process which easily takes double the hours of using photoshop?

Because its cool. And different. And something to discover.

Here is me, excited about my first beeswax carving:

Here is my first amateur print (of birds, an obsession I will post about at a later time):

  1. How cool! Especially as we are examining modern print and the internet, it's good to know that old methods are still valued.

  2. That is pretty awesome, thanks for sharing your Intaglio printing. It is cool to see how there are so many different ways that people can use printing and drawing. Sometimes we get so stuck in the norms of word processing, powerpoint, etc. that we fail to investigate other forms of expression. That is cool that you have found something that love and that allows you to express yourself in a unique way.

  3. I am really impressed with your beeswax print. There is not the same kind of beauty and accomplishment in the digital world - not physical you know? Thanks for the post.
