The Naming of Things

Hello! Welcome to my blog for the Honors Seminar Class: Survey of Digital Technology.

My name is Madeline, I am an illustration major and french minor. I love foxes, indian food, studying peoples' faces, running, Joanna Newsom, creative writing, and all things lovely. I actually have another regular art blog, if you ever want to check it out. I post illustrative work and amateur photography on there about once a week.

I'm gonna be honest, I just kind of signed up for this class because it looked mildly interesting and it fit my schedule like a glove. As I am setting up my blog and everything, I am getting more enthusiastic about it. It seems like there are a lot of ways to be creative with blog posts.

Okay, this isn't a real "technological" post, but my blog looked so empty, so I thought I'd explain the name. Geez, I wish it was really interesting, but its not. I had to order books off of Amazon and there's this way of paying for things on amazon these days by entering a "PayPhrase." There's a random word generator and "tame sequels" was one of the options. (No, I didn't take it, so don't try and buy your textbooks with it, silly.) For some reason, I just loved the way that sounded. It had a poetic air about it and wrote it down in my journal instantly. It just rolls of the tongue nicely, "tame sequels." Plus, this is a sequel blog. So, it fit.

Just so I can make this a legit post, here's a wall street journal article that talks about the new "PayPhrase" option on Amazon:

Here's a good quote, "Although there are seemingly infinite potential combinations, the problem might be that we humans just aren’t sufficiently creative. Amazon automatically generates some inadvertently hilarious suggestions for people when they sign up for a PayPhrase. (For us, Amazon has suggested “Ingrained Abhorrence,” “Enthusiastic Disdain” and “Turn Down Oven.”) Williams said the suggestions aren’t unique to a specific person, and come from Amazon’s efforts to scour tons of books for popular phrases."

Also, blogger is having a hard time listening to my formatting rules, so sorry if this is all spaced a little weird.

  1. Loved browsing your art blog, so thanks for posting the link. And I think you win the prize for the most interesting blog name. Why didn't I think of Tame Sequels?" Since you got it from Amazon, it was very relevant to bring up Amazon. It is a major player in the digital world, and worth evaluating (as well as using). Have you used its recommendation system or wishlist? Great tools even if you don't buy...

We're happy you are in the class and hope you can bring your art perspective into our discussions.

  2. Thank you! I appreciate the publicity.
Yes, I have a growing wishlist on amazon. I am convinced that an amazon gift card is about as good of a present as anyone can receive, as there is so much to offer on the web-based store. . I hope to bring something a little different to the discussions, as I know everyone will.
